Welcome to gsCommunity

For Girl Scout adults and older girls in Northern California

Purpose of gsCommunity

gsCommunity was created to bring together everything in one place - for you to make meaningful connections with other volunteers while getting the support you need.

A few things you’ll see quickly that make gsCommunity different:

It’s for Volunteers, by Volunteers. It’s where you can virtually join with other Girl Scout volunteers. Plus, by building this community off social media, you can have a more efficient and valuable experience with us and each other.

There are More Ways for You to Meet Each Other. There are more ways for you to meet people who are near you, who fall into the same categories, or who care about the same topics.

It's Mobile-first and Virtual-first. You get discussions, activities, event listings and group tools. When you can meet in-person in your area, you'll have everything you need in your pocket, making it much easier to be a volunteer.

Who should join gsCommunity?

New adult leaders and volunteers get the support of their peers and resources to help them lead their troops.

Cadette, Senior and Ambassadors give service to Girl Scouts in a variety of ways. Through their service, such as creating virtual badge kits, they earn the Service to Girl Scouting Bar or the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. They can also pursue Higher Awards and find a supportive network of volunteers that want to help.

Experienced adult volunteers, Service Unit Team members and Girl Scout Alums can network with their peers who are doing troop travel and supporting girls with Higher Awards. They can give service by creating virtual badge and skill kits and by sharing their expertise with new volunteers and older girls.

What You Should Expect from gsCommunity

We’re aiming to make your experience here awesome. We want you to get four key things from gsCommunity:

  1. Swap stories, experiences, and ideas around our shared mission.
  2. Get virtual toolkits on how to lead STEM, outdoors, life skills and entrepreneurship badges, as well as other skills.
  3. Share what you've learned with other Girl Scout volunteers.
  4. Create a private group for your troop, service unit or Silver/Gold Award project.

gsCommunity Guidelines

Be supportive. Encourage and support your fellow members. No one here is looking for your criticism, cynicism, advice, or judgement. (We can get those things on the rest of the Internet).

Share generously. Your stories and experiences may be exactly what another member needs to hear today to solve a problem or seize an opportunity.

Be constructive. We’re here to push each other forward and lift each other up. Find ways to help each other think bigger, reframe challenges, and stay curious.

Don’t spam, promote, or troll. This community exists to help you learn. It’s not a place to spam, promote your services, or bully anyone else.

Girl Scouts is a safe place. We listen to each other and we always stand up against hate.

Why now

Communities help people achieve common goals and feel less isolated. This is incredibly valuable when we are going through the COVID-19 pandemic and can feel alone.

While promising work has been made on COVID-19 vaccines, it might be much longer before we are back to meeting in-person. And Adult volunteers and C/S/A girls may prefer to continue virtually and in-person, in a hybrid model, that better works with all of the activities and work that they have.

Why not just use Facebook?

Facebook provides quick connections to people.

gsCommunity brings together activities, members, posts, questions/polls, articles, events and private groups - all in one place.

What can you do on gsCommunity?

Activities, which are virtual steps to complete badges and learn skills, are the perfect way to find what you need for your troop or service unit.

A Post is the perfect way to share a quick status update and share a single image, video, or embedded link.

A Poll is the perfect way to pose a question with a specific set of answers. This feature is available to moderators.

A Question is the perfect way for members to provide freeform answers.

Articles lets you share knowledge on a specific topic. Articles give you the flexibility to add multiple images, embedded videos and media, and file attachments within one beautifully formatted post.

Courses lets you share step-by-step knowledge on a badge or set of skills. Our Big Hairy Audacious Goal is to have the community create virtual courses for all badges by the end of 2021. This feature is available to moderators.

With Groups, you can get together everyone in a troop, day camp team, higher award project team, etc. This feature is available to moderators.

Private Groups are listed, but only invited members can join and see the activity inside. A Secret Group is hidden from everyone except invited members and community hosts.
